When selecting optical lenses for lighting fixtures, material selection is one of the most important decisions. PMMA and PC are the two dominant raw materials for LED optical lenses on the market. Each material has unique physical, optical and environmental properties, and understanding their differences helps lighting designers and manufacturers pick the correct lens for different lighting scenarios.

PMMA, also known as acrylic, is famous for excellent optical performance. Its light transmittance can reach 91%–92%, higher than most transparent plastic materials. PMMA has very low internal light scattering, so light can pass through the lens with minimal loss. This characteristic makes PMMA optical lenses deliver clearer light spots, sharp beam edges and stable color rendering. PMMA is easy to injection mold, so manufacturers can produce complex free-form optical lens structures with high precision. The surface finish of PMMA lenses is smooth, and they have good resistance to UV aging under moderate temperature.

However, PMMA has obvious limitations in temperature resistance. The continuous working temperature of PMMA is around 80°C. If the LED lamp generates high heat and the lens working temperature exceeds its limit, PMMA will become soft, deform and lose its original optical structure, which changes beam shape and reduces lighting performance. PMMA also has weak impact resistance. Strong impact or heavy vibration may cause cracks, so PMMA lenses are more suitable for indoor lighting products such as downlights, cabinet lights and retail spotlights with low working temperature.

PC, polycarbonate, is the preferred material for high-temperature and harsh-environment lighting. PC can withstand continuous working temperature up to 120°C. It has excellent impact resistance and anti-shock performance, so PC optical lenses are not easy to break under vibration or physical collision. Meanwhile, modified PC materials are added with anti-UV ingredients, resisting ultraviolet radiation from sunlight. These features make PC lenses widely adopted in outdoor lighting: street lights, flood lights, garden lights, stadium lighting and high bay lights.

The downside of PC lenses is slightly lower light transmittance, generally around 88%–90%. Tiny internal impurities may cause slight light scattering, so the light spot effect is not as clean as PMMA. PC material also has a higher shrinkage rate during injection molding, which raises the difficulty of mold production and increases manufacturing cost.

To sum up, choose PMMA optical lens if your lamp works indoors with low heat requirement and you pursue high transmittance and perfect light spot effect. Choose PC optical lens for outdoor, high-heat, vibration-prone lighting fixtures. Before bulk purchasing, you should test lens performance under your lamp’s actual working temperature, and verify anti-yellowing performance. Matching the lens material with your lighting application will guarantee stable lamp performance and reduce after-sales failure risks.
