Material quality directly determines the service life, optical performance, and stability of light guide rods, and optical-grade PMMA and PC are the two mainstream core materials for lamp light guide rods in the market. For lighting product manufacturers and engineering purchasers, distinguishing the performance differences between the two materials and selecting a suitable light guide rod is crucial to improving the overall quality and market competitiveness of lamps. Both materials have unique advantages, adapting to different lighting scenarios and usage environments.

PMMA (acrylic) light guide rods are the most widely used in civilian and commercial lighting. This material features ultra-high light transmittance, pure light color, and excellent light homogenization effect. Its visible light transmittance can reach 93%, almost close to the light transmission limit of transparent materials, which can minimize light loss and improve the overall brightness of lamps. In terms of lighting effect, PMMA has low optical dispersion, no yellow light distortion, and can restore the true color of the light source, making it very suitable for high-color-rendering indoor lighting, display cabinet lighting, and decorative lamps. In addition, PMMA light guide rods have fine surface texture, high finish, and good plasticity, supporting various precision customization shapes to meet the personalized design needs of modern lamps.

PC (polycarbonate) light guide rods are positioned in high-strength and high-temperature resistant lighting scenarios, solving the defect of poor toughness of PMMA materials. Although the light transmittance of PC is slightly lower than PMMA (about 90-91%), it has outstanding impact resistance, compression resistance, and high-temperature stability. It will not crack or deform under strong impact, high temperature, and long-term vibration environments, and has excellent anti-aging and anti-yellowing performance. This makes PC light guide rods the preferred choice for automotive lighting, outdoor waterproof lamps, industrial equipment lighting, and high-frequency switching lamps, which require high durability and environmental adaptability.

In practical lamp production, the two materials form a complementary advantage system. PMMA light guide rods focus on high light efficiency and high-quality lighting effects, suitable for static indoor and commercial decorative lighting; PC light guide rods focus on structural stability and environmental resistance, adapting to harsh working conditions. Both materials have passed professional optical and environmental protection tests, with no ultraviolet radiation, no light decay, and long service life, which can effectively extend the service cycle of lamps and reduce after-sales maintenance costs for lighting products.
