The performance of lighting lenses directly determines the lighting effect, service life, and stability of LED lamps, and lens material selection is the key factor affecting optical quality. The mainstream materials for modern lighting lenses are optical-grade PMMA (acrylic) and PC (polycarbonate), supplemented by high-purity optical glass for high-end special lamps. Different materials have distinct differences in light transmittance, temperature resistance, weather resistance, and impact resistance, and are suitable for different lighting scenarios and lamp types.
PMMA optical lenses are the most widely used material in civil and commercial lighting. This material has a light transmittance of over 92%, with extremely high optical clarity, no light distortion, and uniform light output effect. It has excellent molding performance, suitable for manufacturing various complex structural lenses such as TIR lenses, Fresnel lenses, and micro-diffuser lenses. PMMA lenses are low in cost, lightweight, and not easy to yellowing in indoor environments, making them the first choice for indoor downlights, panel lights, track spotlights, and home lighting fixtures.
PC optical lenses are mainly used in outdoor and high-strength working lighting scenarios. Although PC material has a slightly lower light transmittance than PMMA (about 90%), it has outstanding impact resistance, high temperature resistance, and anti-aging performance. It can withstand harsh outdoor environments such as strong ultraviolet rays, high temperature, rain and snow erosion, and is not easy to crack or deform. Therefore, PC lighting lenses are widely used in outdoor street lamps, floodlights, garden lights, and automotive lighting fixtures, ensuring long-term stable operation of lamps in complex environments.
High-end optical glass lenses are applied in professional precision lighting fields such as medical lighting, stage lighting, and aerospace lighting. Glass materials have ultra-high light transmittance, zero light distortion, excellent high-temperature resistance, and anti-scratch performance, which can meet the ultra-high precision optical requirements of professional lamps. In practical application, lamp manufacturers will match lens materials and structures according to scenario needs, combining different lens types to achieve the best balance of lighting effect, energy efficiency, and service life, which is the core logic of modern lighting optical design.
